Trapped Under Vice

It has been almost five years to the day since the last in the so-far-five-part mix series, Trapped Under Vice, was posted on this very blog. The original links for these mixes got lost to DMCA complaints etc. so I have finally re-uploaded all five volumes for your downloading and listening pleasure.
The series spanned a 14-month spell from July 2009 to September 2010 in which the prolific mixmaker, now simply titled DJ Fenriz, supplied me with five killer mixes, each one an almost entirely different genre to the last, which undeniably had its influence on my radio show. Of course, he went on to do more sweet mixes for this blog and others, before finally starting his own radio show earlier this year.
So here, once again, for all those who weren't around then or didn't know/care, are the mixes. I had to "remaster" some of the artworks due to the odd mistake and bad typeface, but if you want more info on the mixes such as tracklistings and wise words from the man himself about each compilation, click through the title to get to the original post for each respective mix. Cry out!

VOLUME I

VOLUME II

I will be (slowly) re-uploading all the missing links for all the AFITFOG mixes in time. 'til then, keep it locked to Radio Fenriz (especially the CULT METAL shows), for similar listening. Thanks again to Fenriz for keeping the flame lit and to all heavy metal maniacs worldwide. Hell awaits!

Midnite Madness LXXIV—Recollecting The Beast

ALRIGHT. This month's show saw me recalling the best of the older AFITFOG mixes, some of which date back to 2009. I will be re-uploading these sporadically over the next days/months/years, so keep checking back for new links.
Thanks as always to you for listening and making last month's show was Number 1 in the Mixcloud Metal Charts (!?!), and to Flo for his killer new mix that will follow this post shortly. I will return with more darkness and evil on August 25th. I kinda feel an old school black metal show brewing, but then I have four or five ideas for shows ready to be devoured... In time!

A Fist in the Face of God presents... Fenriz a.k.a. DJ V.K.O.M. -Trapped Under Vice, Vol. V

It's that time again, folks. Yep, the latest in the Trapped Under Vice mix series from Darkthone's Fenriz a.k.a. DJ V.K.O.M., is here. And it's about as speed/heavy metal (in the purest sense of the term) as you will find anywhere. As always, I will leave the talking to the man himself.
BEWINGED HEAVY METAL GLORY
Mostly speed metal tracks, in the easy simple way that I use the term - fast heavy metal tracks. The ice breakers in between are slower heavy metal tracks - namely heavy metal.
BTW this time I DIDN'T include a tough cookie as the first song, no, it's a 'fenomenal' song instead!
Fenriz, summer of 2010.

Fenriz aka DJ V.K.O.M. & Sindre Solem of Obliteration present... Trapped Under Vice, Vol. IV

Trapped Under Vice, Vol. IV
is here. By now you know the drill, Fenriz, aka DJ Vast Knowledge Of Music, digs into his alarmingly large vinyl collection for you. This time accompanying Fenriz in the mix is Obliteration’s Sindre Solem. When I was in Norway last year I saw the duo DJ at Fenriz’s old place (which is where I took the picture for the cover), and it was insane. This mix lives up that memory, and beyond. I will leave the talking to the mix-makers from here.

Fenriz: I decided to do an epic metal mix for you all at Vice and those thousands who download the mixes. But, I was expecting Sindre over that evening, so I thought, “Why not just tell him we’ll do a mix together, like we did the first times both of us hung out together down at my DIRTY SHITTY GAMLEBYEN FLAT”. I had my songs laid out in 30 minutes, Sindre had no time to prepare, I just gave him 15 minutes to pull out some stuff, so the mix is rather gung-ho.
Sindre: I was taken by surprise when Fenriz told me that we we’re doing a mix for Vice, only few hours before Ciekals and I arrived to pound some brewskies and listen to great music. I quickly scrambled together some gems from Fen’s vast collection of killer vinyl. The cool and important thing with live mixes are the transitions, I live for a smooth transition and I think we got some cool ones here. Plus some fuck ups of course. That’s what you get when you don’t plan anything. Hope you all will enjoy mix of organic sounds and hairy balls! Ughhh!
TRACKLISTING:
1. [Fenriz] Metal Church (USA) “Beyond the Black” (1984)
2. [Sindre] E-X-E (USA) “Autopsy” (1987)
3. [Fenriz] Dio (USA) “Egypt” (The Chains Are On) (1984)
4. [Sindre] Bad Religion (USA) “You” (1989)
5. [Fenriz] Accept (Germany) “Princess of the Dawn” (1982)
6. [Sindre] Colosseum (UK) “The Kettle” (1969)
7. [Fenriz] Manilla Road (USA) “The Ninth Wave” (1985)
8. [Sindre] Autopsy (USA) “Retribution for the Dead” (1991)
9. INTERMISSION
10. [Fenriz] Agent Steel (USA) “The Day at Guyana” (1987)
11. [Sindre] Summon The Crows (Norway) “Scavenger’s Feast” (2006)
12. [Fenriz] Warlord (USA) “Beginning/Lucifer’s Hammer” (1984)
13. [Sindre] The Fire Escape “Journey’s End” (1967)
Thanks again to Fenriz and Sindre for their hard work and mixtape making skills, enjoy.
Fenriz would also like to add that this mix is dedicated to Dio. †RIP RJD†

Fenriz aka DJ V.K.O.M. presents... Trapped Under Vice, Vol. III

Trapped Under Vice, Vol. III is here. This mix needs no introduction from me, so it’s over to Fenriz...
METAL PUNK BLISS MIX
My idea here was just to show what metal punk CAN BE FOR ME, and what it was my entire life!
All of the vinyls were pulled out of the shelves, those vinyls I always had since the 80s, plus one
from the new Darkthrone test press. In the beginning I thought y’all could figure out the track listing
by helping each other out on the comments page, but then that COULD be braindead and also…

…some people are squares. So, here’s the tracklisting of this continuous two vinyl decks and mixer comp:
OH, and the first track is there to throw off the posers. Again.
00:00 Sacrilege (UK) “Search Eternal” (1987) None more epic, mesmerised me from an early age.
10:36 Puke (Sweden) “Klockan Går, Klämtar Och Slår” (1987) The mid-part has a gorgeous riff.
14:17 Voivod (Canada) “Tornado” (1987) OK, so I “always” drop this track.
20:18 Onslaught (UK) “The Devil’s Legion” (1985) Cuz “Thermonuclear” is a bit overplayed.
24:24 Iron Maiden (UK) “Purgatory” (1981) Yeah, definitely metal NWOBHM-punk.
27:40 Carnivore (USA) “Inner Conflict” (1987) Talk about trademark bass-sound!
32:40 English Dogs (UK) “Enter the Domain” (1987) A WATER-intro, no less.
37:47 Metallica (USA) “Metal Militia” (1983) Hell yeah, metal punk aesthetic.42:53 Darkthrone (Norway) “I Am the Graves of the 80s” (2010) Why ain’t my last name ANDERSON?!
45:44 Dr. Know (USA) “War Theatre” (1988) From grossly underestimated album.
50:27 Motörhead (UK) “Fire, Fire” (1980) The last part ALWAYS give me goosebumps. holy SHIT!
53:00 Celtic Frost (Switzerland) “Into the Crypts of Rays” (1984) C’mon, I had to.
#goodbye-track#57:14 Warfare (UK) “Murder on Melrose” (1986) This features the only good mixing-transition on this mix, haha!
Fenriz
The mix is an hour long, in one, continuous track. It includes the artwork which is the correct size for a tape cover, so get yourself a 120-minute tape, record the mix on both sides, print your cover, and it will look as killer as this bad boy…

Trapped Under Vice, Vol. II - Alternate Covers

So a few people are a bit pissed that the excellent Trapped Under Vice, Vol. II has (partly) the same cover as Manilla Road's Mark of the Beast, but doesn't contain any Manilla Road. Well, here are what were possible covers for that mixtape. Fenriz chose the final one, his mix, his choice!

I actually like the last two best myself, they are rough drafts though, which is why the fonts are kinda all over the place and hard to make out. If you missed the mix click here.

Fenriz aka DJ V.K.O.M. presents... Trapped Under Vice, Vol. II

Following the success of the first in the Trapped Under Vice mix series by resident A Fist in the Face of God mix-maker Fenriz back in July, we have the highly-anticipated second instalment of the series, imaginatively titled Trapped Under Vice Vol. II. In stark contrast to the style of the first volume, I wanted a style I know virtually nothing about, so I asked Fenriz for a collection of the stuff that had inspired the people who had inspired him to make music. Anyways, here is the intro from the man himself.

Fenriz aka DJ V.K.O.M. presents... Trapped Under Vice, Vol. I

Back when I started doing my weekly blog for Vice at the beginning of the year I really wanted to interview Darkthrone's Fenriz for it, the reasons are pretty obvious, but he declined stating a rigorous interviewing schedule that he had just finished. I was a little bummed out but we kept in contact and he would tip me off on so many bands I would never have heard of without his vast knowledge of music. Anyway, I then tried to get him to DJ to no avail. When I heard the Actual Pain mixtape I was naturally lost for words and asked him if there was any possibility he could do one for Vice. No problem he said. He would love to. And here it is. Intro from the man himself...

First words. I started the comp by thinking of some acts that should definitely be on there. Then I mulled it over for a week. I then sat down to structure it, and I had several darlings to kill and new ones to include. I am not making a ONE STYLE comp here, like 'occult thrash' or something. I chose numbers mostly from bands that are/were old and rough and soulfully sounding, but thrash is one of the most intense genres, so it sort of HAS TO be varied, WHEN I MAKE 78+ minutes here!

I was thinking of dropping 3 of the songs to make it more like a hit parade, but one needs some ups and downs in life ha ha. Better to leave the mix untampered with.

So...it is sort of a whole labyrinth of songs, a world to get lost in.

I also start with two tracks that has really underground sound, so I will lose all posers that try to listen to the mix.
